The Concordia College Alabama Division of Education will hold a Literacy Festival, themed “The Magic of Literacy,” for all second grade students in the Selma City, Dallas County, Lowndes County, and Wilcox County school systems. The event will take place Tuesday, May 2nd from 9:00am – 1:30pm. The event is being conducted as a joint effort between Concordia and a number of community sponsors and organizations. An estimated 400-450 second graders are expected to attend.
Students participating in the festival will see a live theatrical performance of Dr. Seuss’ The Cat in the Hat as well as a literary dramatization of “Shades of Black,” both performed by CCA students. Free books will also be distributed to all participants as well as to the chaperoning teachers. The participants will also be fed a kid-friendly hotdog lunch and participate in recreational activities such as field games, a bounce house and train ride on CCA’s west campus lawn.
The festival is being co-sponsored by International Paper, who provided partial funding for the event. Local Greek organizations, educational sororities, and honor societies also lent a hand by donating books and/or volunteering their time and resources to ensure the success of the event.
